The wheel is not merely the connection between the tyre and the hub: it plays a direct role in managing unsprung mass, steering response, braking precision and the car’s ability to transmit the loads generated while driving to the road surface.

Formula cars differ significantly from production-based vehicles. Low weight, a low centre of gravity, particularly stiff suspension, dedicated tyres and high lateral acceleration require wheels developed around the actual geometry of the single-seater.

For these applications, EVO Corse has developed two dedicated ranges: FormulaCorse, manufactured from A356-T6 aluminium alloy, and Formula Forged, produced by forging an aerospace-grade aluminium alloy.

Two solutions that differ in manufacturing technology, dimensions and field of use, but share the same objective: achieving the correct balance between mass, stiffness and strength.

Why wheel weight matters so much on a single-seater

The wheel forms part of the vehicle’s unsprung mass, together with the tyres, hubs, uprights and part of the braking system. Reducing mass in this area allows the suspension to respond more quickly to changes in the road surface, helping the tyre maintain more consistent contact with the tarmac.

A wheel is also a rotating mass. Its weight, and above all how that weight is distributed relative to the axis of rotation, affects the system’s inertia. A well-optimised wheel requires less energy to accelerate or decelerate and can help make the car more responsive during turn-in, braking and acceleration.

Low weight, however, cannot be pursued in isolation. Excessively reducing structural sections could compromise stiffness or impact resistance. The design process therefore focuses on removing material where it is not required and retaining it along the paths through which loads are transferred.

Stiffness and steering precision

When cornering, the wheel must transmit high lateral forces without deforming enough to alter the tyre’s behaviour. The same applies under braking and acceleration, when longitudinal loads pass through the hub, spokes and rim barrel before reaching the tyre.

Uncontrolled deformation can alter the tyre’s orientation and contact patch, reducing the precision perceived by the driver. A single-seater wheel must therefore be light, yet sufficiently stiff to deliver predictable behaviour.

The design is developed through careful analysis of spoke geometry, rim-barrel sections and the hub interface. Structural simulations and FEM analysis make it possible to assess stress distribution before production and subsequent physical testing.

The role of spoke design in brake cooling

On a single-seater, the space available inside the wheel is limited, while the braking system must dissipate a significant amount of thermal energy.

Spoke design therefore also performs an aerodynamic and thermal function. The openings must allow adequate airflow without compromising the wheel’s structural continuity.

FormulaCorse was developed with a geometry that combines low weight, strength and airflow towards the braking system. EVO Corse lists improved brake cooling management and reduced rotational inertia among the model’s benefits. Evo Corse Evo Corse

Centre-lock: much more than faster wheel changes

On professional single-seaters, the wheel is frequently secured by a single central nut. This solution enables rapid fitting and removal, while also offering advantages in terms of packaging and hub design.

FormulaCorse is manufactured exclusively in centre-lock configurations and can be adapted to different applications according to the vehicle’s technical specifications. Evo Corse

The centre-lock system should not, however, be considered a universal standard for every open-wheel car. The configuration always depends on the category regulations and the specific hub design.

FormulaCorse: EVO Corse’s 13-inch wheel for single-seaters

FormulaCorse is EVO Corse’s aluminium-alloy range developed for single-seaters and racing applications.

The wheel is manufactured from A356-T6 alloy and is available in a 13-inch diameter, with widths ranging from 8 to 10.5 inches. It is used in circuit racing, hill climbs, slalom and Formula Driver, and is available for Dallara Formula 3 and Gloria cars. Other configurations can be developed on request. Evo Corse Evo Corse

Available sizes include:

8×13”, 8,5×13”, 9×13”, 10×13” e 10,5×13”.

The range therefore supports different front and rear configurations, accommodating the various tyre sections used on single-seaters.

The spoke and rim-barrel design has been optimised to reduce weight without sacrificing the stiffness and strength required in competition. Offset, centre-lock interface and hub geometry also vary according to the selected configuration.

FormulaCorse is particularly well suited to cars that require a dedicated 13-inch wheel, but not necessarily one made from magnesium. EVO Corse states that its weight and strength are comparable with those of some of the best magnesium wheels on the market. Evo Corse

Formula Forged: when forging expands design possibilities

Formula Forged extends EVO Corse’s single-seater range through the use of forging technology.

The process begins with an aluminium-alloy billet subjected to high pressure, altering and aligning the material’s internal grain structure. Compared with a cast wheel, this technology delivers high mechanical properties and allows sections to be optimised for the expected loads.

The benefit is not simply a lighter wheel. Forging provides greater freedom in distributing material and makes it possible to develop specific geometries around track width, brakes, hub, tyre and suspension clearances. EVO Corse applies this technology to ranges intended for applications in which every component must be precisely matched to the vehicle. Evo Corse

Formula Forged is manufactured from aerospace-grade aluminium alloy and was developed for single-seaters such as Formula 3 cars, sports prototypes and historic Formula 1 cars. LinkedIn
The wheel retains a 13-inch diameter while accommodating exceptionally wide sections, up to 14.5 inches. This makes it suitable for cars with very wide rear tyres and for historic or specialist applications where the original geometry must be reproduced with care.

FormulaCorse or Formula Forged?

The choice between the two ranges is not based on weight alone.

FormulaCorse is the A356-T6 aluminium-alloy solution for single-seaters using 13-inch wheels between 8 and 10.5 inches wide. It offers several centre-lock configurations and is suitable for earlier-generation Formula 3 cars, Gloria cars, Formula Driver, slalom, circuit racing and hill climbs.

Formula Forged is intended for applications that demand an even more specific design, greater widths or a forged wheel. Its field of use includes Formula 3 cars, sports prototypes and historic single-seaters, including selected period Formula 1 cars.

The correct configuration must be assessed by considering:

tyre size and profile;

hub and centre-lock geometry;

required offset;

brake caliper clearance;

vehicle track width;

expected loads;

the category’s technical regulations.

On a single-seater, selecting diameter and width alone is not enough. Even a few millimetres can cause interference with suspension components, brake calipers, control arms or aerodynamic elements.

From 13 to 18 inches: each Formula category follows its own regulations

The term “Formula” covers cars from very different eras and categories.

Contemporary Formula 1 uses 18-inch wheels. The 2026 FIA Technical Regulations specify a 462.6 mm rim diameter and dedicated front and rear dimensions. They also require AZ70 or AZ80 magnesium alloys, with every design subject to the prescribed impact test.

This does not mean that 13-inch wheels have become irrelevant. The diameter continues to be used on many single-seaters, sports prototypes and historic racing cars. In these applications, the wheels must be compatible with tyres, braking systems and geometries originally designed around this size.

FormulaCorse and Formula Forged serve precisely this area of motorsport: cars for which the 13-inch wheel remains an essential element of the vehicle’s dynamics and engineering.

A wheel developed around the car

A Formula wheel cannot be considered a generic component.

Material, manufacturing process, width, offset, spoke geometry and fastening system must work together. Mass must be reduced without compromising stiffness; airflow must coexist with structural strength; and the rim-barrel profile must accommodate the tyre characteristics and braking-system clearances.

With FormulaCorse and Formula Forged, EVO Corse offers two different technologies to meet these requirements: an A356-T6 aluminium-alloy range developed for various centre-lock applications, and a forged solution for highly specific configurations and wider rear sections.

Not simply two variants of the same product, but two different approaches to designing the wheel around the single-seater.

Looking for a wheel configuration for your single-seater or sports prototype?

Contact the EVO Corse team with the vehicle model, tyre size, hub specifications and braking-system clearances.
